Upgrading from the American Express® Gold Card to The Platinum Card® from American Express is a straightforward process.

You can request an upgrade by either calling the number on the back of your Amex Gold card or live chatting with an agent on AmericanExpress.com.

You are required to wait at least one year from the account opening to upgrade the card.

But if you haven’t received a welcome bonus for the Amex Platinum, I recommend you sign up for the The Platinum Card® from American Express instead of upgrading.

You could then either keep, cancel, or downgrade the Amex Gold to the American Express® Green Card.

I think the Amex Gold and Amex Platinum combination is really powerful, so I always recommend people hold both cards to get the airport lounge access of the Amex Platinum with the great points earning of the Amex Gold.
