Welcome Bonus of United Club Business

The bonus miles give you immediate access to United’s extensive award flight options, including the ability to book travel to over 1,300 destinations worldwide. Earning Miles with United Club Business

The United Club Business Card earns miles at the following rates:

  • 2x miles per dollar on eligible United purchases
  • 5x miles per dollar on hotel stays prepaid through Renowned Hotels and Resorts
  • 1.5x miles per dollar on all other purchases

The United Club Business card offers a specialized earning structure that doesn’t quite match its premium price tag. While the 5x on Renowned Hotels looks impressive on paper, you’ll sacrifice hotel elite benefits and status credits when booking through this portal—a significant downside for frequent travelers.

The 2x on United purchases is merely adequate, especially considering competing cards offer similar or better rates with more flexibility. For everyday business spending, the 1.5x baseline provides consistent but unexceptional returns.

Annual Fee of United Club Business

The United Club Business Card comes with a hefty $695 annual fee, but this cost is effectively offset by the complimentary United Club membership that normally costs at least $750 per year. You’ll also receive numerous statement credits including up to $200 for Renowned Hotels and Resorts bookings, up to $200 for JSX flights, up to $150 for ride-hailing services, and more.

Employee cards are provided at no additional cost, allowing business owners to extend card benefits to employees while centralizing business expenses.

Primary Rental Car Insurance steps in as the primary coverage when renting for business purposes for any damage or theft of a rental vehicle paid for with this card without needing to use your own auto insurance.

Trip Delay Insurance: When your trip is significantly delayed due to covered reasons like equipment failures or severe weather, this protection reimburses you for reasonable expenses including lodging, meals, toiletries, and medication. The coverage activates when you pay for travel with your card and extends to family members on the same itinerary, though you’ll need to seek reimbursement from the travel carrier first.

Trip Cancellation & Interruption Insurance: This protection reimburses you for non-refundable, prepaid travel expenses if you need to cancel before departure or cut your trip short due to covered situations like severe illness or weather events. Coverage activates when you pay for your trip with the card, but it’s important to note that reimbursement only applies for specific covered reasons rather than any cancellation.

Baggage Delay Insurance: Missing luggage doesn’t have to derail your trip – this coverage steps in to reimburse you for essential purchases when your checked bags are delayed by airlines, trains, or other carriers. You can grab the necessities you need, from a fresh outfit to personal care items, while waiting for your bags to arrive.

Lost Luggage Reimbursement: Your checked luggage gets extra protection against loss, theft, or damage beyond the basic compensation offered by carriers when you pay for travel with this card.

Redeeming United Airlines Miles

United MileagePlus offers numerous opportunities to redeem miles for flights on United and its extensive network of Star Alliance and other airline partners. Here are some of the best ways to use United miles:

For international travel, business and first class award tickets often provide excellent value. You can fly Lufthansa first class from the U.S. to Europe for 121,000 miles one-way, experiencing one of the most sought-after premium cabins. United’s own Polaris business class to Europe starts at 80,000 miles one-way, featuring lie-flat seats with direct aisle access.

United’s Excursionist Perk allows you to add a free one-way segment within a single region on round-trip international itineraries, effectively giving you a free stopover. This can be creatively used to visit multiple destinations on one award ticket.

Short-haul flights under 800 miles outside the U.S. can be booked for just 8,800 miles in economy, making United miles useful for intra-region travel in places like Europe or Africa. Within the U.S., domestic flights can sometimes be found for as low as 5,000 miles one-way with United’s dynamic pricing.

For long-haul travel, you can book business class to Africa on Star Alliance partners like Ethiopian Airlines or South African Airways for 88,000 miles one-way. ANA’s excellent business class to Japan, featuring “The Room” seats on some aircraft, starts at 110,000 miles.

United miles can also get you to hard-to-reach places like the Galápagos Islands, with economy flights from Ecuador starting at just 8,800 miles one-way on Avianca. Caribbean destinations can be reached from 13,200 miles round-trip in economy from the U.S.

Remember that United doesn’t pass on fuel surcharges for partner awards, keeping out-of-pocket costs low. While redemption rates may not always be the absolute lowest, the ease of booking online and access to extensive Star Alliance inventory make United MileagePlus a valuable program for award travelers.

Pros and Cons

Here are the advantages and disadvantages of this card:

Pros:

United Club Membership: This is the card’s standout benefit, providing complimentary access to United Club lounges (valued at $750) for the cardholder plus one adult guest and children under 18. You can even upgrade to United Club All-Access membership (with Star Alliance lounge access) by reaching Premier Gold status or through card spending.

Travel Benefits: You’ll receive Premier Access travel services (priority check-in, security screening, boarding, and baggage handling), free first and second checked bags for you and a companion, and complimentary Premier upgrades on award tickets. These benefits can significantly enhance your United travel experience.

Travel Protections: The card features robust travel insurance including trip cancellation/interruption (up to $10,000 per person), trip delay reimbursement, baggage delay coverage, and primary rental car insurance. These protections apply worldwide and can potentially save you thousands during travel disruptions.

Valuable Statement Credits: The card offers numerous credits including up to $200 for Renowned Hotels and Resorts, up to $200 for JSX flights, monthly rideshare credits, rental car credits, and more. When maximized, these credits can substantially offset the annual fee.

Cons:

High Annual Fee: The $695 annual fee is substantial and requires strategic use of the card’s benefits to justify. While the United Club membership alone technically offsets this cost, you need to be a frequent United traveler to maximize value.

Modest Earning Structure: The card only offers 2x miles on United purchases (plus your base miles as a MileagePlus member) and 1.5x miles on other purchases. This earning rate is unimpressive for a premium card, especially compared to alternatives with stronger bonus categories for business spending.

United-Centric Redemptions: Unlike cards that earn transferable points currencies, your redemption options are mostly limited to United and its partners. This makes the card less flexible if your travel needs or preferences change over time.

Overlapping Elite Benefits: Many of the card’s benefits duplicate what’s already provided to United Premier elite members. If you or your employees already hold Gold status or higher, the incremental value of some card benefits is significantly reduced.

Is the United Club Business Worth It?

I’ve been analyzing the United Club Business Card and found it presents a mix of benefits against its $695 annual fee.

The complimentary United Club membership (valued at $750) mathematically offsets the fee, but only if you regularly visit these lounges during your travels.

The card offers numerous statement credits for rideshares, car rentals, and JSX flights, though these require tracking and intentional use to extract their value – they’re not automatic savings.

For business owners who frequently fly United, the free checked bags and Premier Access benefits can improve your travel experience, potentially saving time and money on each trip.

You’ll need to realistically consider your United travel frequency and whether you’ll actively use the benefits enough to justify the cost.

This card makes the most sense if you’re already spending significantly on United flights and value airport lounge access, but requires more effort than cards with simpler benefit structures.
