Best Ways to Use Air France & KLM Flying Blue Miles for Maximum Value

Points Calculator: You can see how many points you need using the Flying Blue Calculator. Flying Blue got rid of their award chart, so you have to use the calculator to find how much your trip will cost. This also allows Flying Blue to adjust the prices easily without notice.

 Award Tips and Rules

SkyTeam Airlines: Aeroflot, Aerolineas Argentinas, Aeromexico, Air Europa, Air France, China Airlines, China Eastern, China Southern, Czech Airlines, Delta, Garuda Indonesia, Kenya Airways, KLM, Korean Air, MEA, Saudia, Tarom, Vietnam, and Xiamen Airlines.

Other Partners: Air Tahiti Nui, GOL, Hawaiian, Japan Airlines, Jet Airways, Malaysia Airlines, WestJet.

Basics: You can book roundtrip or one-way. You cannot do a mixed cabin award. Most awards can be booked online, but you may have to call in for some.

Online Booking: You can book online using Air France’s Award Search

Fuel Surcharges: Air France passes most partner airline’s fuel surcharges. If you want to avoid them, book on Delta (exception: originating in Europe), Aeromexico, Hawaiian, Air Europa, and Xiamen. The surcharges are reasonable on China Airlines, China Southern, China Eastern, and Korean.

Stopover: No stopovers (previously Air France allowed one, but they changed the rule without notice).

Air France First Class Awards: Only available to Flying Blue elite status members.

Flexible Search Tip- You can see award space for an entire month if you (1) select “Use your Miles” on their Home Page (requires you to sign into Flying Blue account), and (2) select box “You are looking for a flight around these dates.”

Award Hold: 48 hours if you ask a Flying Blue phone agent.

Promo Awards: Each month, Air France offers discounted promotional awards from select cities. Awards have to booked that particular month for travel in the next three months. These are non-refundable. I recommend you price out an award to Paris first and then see if you can fly to another city for a similar number of points.

Fees: $50 USD to cancel a classic reward ticket. Promo rewards are non-refundable. Ticketing online is free, but $70 fee for booking with the call center.

Phantom Award Space: If you find an award online, call before you transfer points. Sometimes the Air France’s online system is wrong.
