Marriott Hotels Information and Points Program Overview

Good Things About Marriott

Large Footprint– Marriott is one of the largest hotel brands now that they have acquired Starwood Hotels and own Ritz Carlton.

Partnership With United- Marriott has a nice partnership with United Airlines, which allows Marriott Platinum members to get United Silver Status. Additionally, United Elite members with Gold, Platinum, or 1k status can get Marriott Gold status.

Transfers to Airline Partners- Coming in August 2018, you can transfer Marriott points at a rate of  3 Marriott to 1 Airline point to 45 different airline programs, with a 5,000 airline points bonus when you transfer 60,000 Marriott points.

Bad Things About Marriott

Low Point Value- IHG, Hilton, and Marriott all suffer from low points values for their programs. This hurts Marriott since their credit card only earns 2 point per dollar for n0n-bonus category spending. That is the equivalent of only earning about 1.6% cashback when redeeming for hotels (2 x 0.8 cents per point), when you could easily earn 2% cashback with Citi Double Cash card. But if you transfer your Marriott points to an airline, you get more value.

Upcoming Changes- Marriott will be introducing a new hotel award chart in 2019 that takes into account peak booking times, which costs an extra 5,000 to 30,000 points per night depending on category.

Other Information

Average Point Value: 0.8 Cents Per Point

Points Pooling: You can transfer up to 50,000 points to another member. However, there is a fee of $10 per transfer, which is waived for Gold and Platinum Elite members. You have to do this over the phone. You can bypass this rule by transferring your Marriott points to SPG at a 3:1 ratio and transferring from SPG to the other person’s Marriott account at a 1:3 ratio for the same number of Marriott points,

Best Price Guarantee: If you book directly with Marriott and find a lower hotel rate within 24 hours of your reservation, Marriott will match the rate and give you 25% discount or 5,000 points. You can fill out your claim online.
