Marriott Bonvoy Elite Status Guide

Marriott Bonvoy Elite Program Logo

Marriott’s new Bonvoy elite status program has six elite status levels: Member, Silver Elite, Gold Elite, Platinum Elite, Titanium Elite, and Ambassador Elite.

Earning Marriott Elite Status

You can earn Marriott elite status either by (1) staying at a Marriott Hotel, (2) having a certain Chase or American Express credit card, or (3) matching your status with another hotel brand to Marriott. Marriott is changing the name of their rewards program from Marriott Rewards to Marriott Bonvoy, which resulted in some small changes to the elite program.

Silver Elite

Gold Elite

Platinum Elite

  • 50 Nights

Titanium Elite

  • 75 Nights

Ambassador Elite

  • 100 nights AND $20,000 qualifying spend

Lifetime Marriott Status

  • Silver Elite- 250 lifetime nights + five years elite status
  • Gold Elite- 400 lifetime nights + 7 years Gold Elite status or higher
  • Platinum Elite- 600 Lifetime nights + 10 Years Platinum Elite status

Earning Elite Credits With Multiple Rooms

  • If you book multiple rooms under your Marriott number, you can earn only one elite night credit per night, but you can earn points for up to three rooms per night.

Elite Status Match

Marriott prefers a “Status Challenge” rather than a “Status Match” to obtain elite status. Marriott typically requires eight nights in three months for Gold elite status, and sixteen nights in three months for Platinum elite status. You can do an elite status challenge by emailing them at or by phone at 801-468-4000. You can only do a status challenge every three years.

  • United Airlines:  The one exception is if you have elite status with United Airlines (Gold, Platinum, or 1K) due to a reciprocal elite status program. United elites get Marriott Gold status without having to stay a certain number of nights.

Elite Status Qualification Period

Once you earn a certain elite status level, that status will be valid until for the current year plus the following year plus two months. For example, if you earned Titanium Elite status in August 2019, you would have elite status until the end of February 2021.

Alternatively, you could choose the gift option at 50 nights and suite award option at 75 nights. Suite night awards allow you to confirm an upgrade to a suite before you arrive, but they are on a per room and per night basis (a two-night stay would require 2 suite night awards. Whereas with Hyatt, one free suite certificate is good for stays up to seven nights). Suite Night Awards can be used with paid rates, award stays, and Cash + Points stays. Suite Night Awards can be used at all brands except Aloft, Element, Marriott Vacation Club, and Vistana.

    • Allows you to have the room for 24 hours outside of normal arrival and departure times; (e.g., if you check in at 9 p.m you can have the room until 9 p.m. the following day. If you check in between 9 a.m and 4 p.m., you can still check out at 4 p.m.) These requests are arranged via your Ambassador. You can get this benefit at all Marriott brands except Marriott Vacation clubs, Design Hotels, and some Vistana hotels.

Ambassador Service

You are assigned a specific “Ambassador” who can be very helpful trying to get you an upgrade, early check-in, special services at the hotel, and sometimes they will proactively arrange for free things to be delivered to your room especially for birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, etc. Let your ambassador know things that are important to you in a hotel stay and some information about you so that they can arrange for a more personal service. Additionally, if you don’t like your Ambassador, you can request to be reassigned to a new one.

The “best available room” may include rooms with desirable views, rooms on high floors, corner rooms, rooms with special amenities, rooms on executive floors, or suites. Each hotel decides what rooms are in the upgrade pool, so some hotels are more generous than others with upgrades. Additionally, upgrades are not available at Marriott Vacation Club, Marriott Grand Residence Club, Aloft, Element, or Vistana properties.

Lounge Access

Allows you access to the lounge for the member and one guest. However, it only applies to the room in which the Platinum Elite/Platinum Premier Elite member is staying.

  • Hotels with lounge access excluding resorts: JW Marriott, Marriott, Delta, Autograph, Renaissance, Courtyard (outside of U.S. and Canada)
  • Hotels with lounges access including resorts: Le Meridien, Westin, and Sheraton.
  • If Hotel Has No Lounge or Lounge is Closed- At Marriotts, JW, Delta Hotels, Autograph Collection, and Renaissance Hotels, the hotel must offer breakfast in restaurant for two or 750 points per day (or $100 if no breakfast or points were offered). At Courtyards (outside of U.S. and Canada and hotels with a lounge), if the lounge is closed, the hotel must offer breakfast in the restaurant. At Sheraton, Westin, and Le Meridien, the hotel does not need to offer an alternative.
