Recommendations

You have two options when using Capital One Venture or Spark card points. You can either cash them out for 1 cent per point or transfer them to an airline a 2 to 1.5 airline point ratio for the following airlines:

Aeromexico (SkyTeam)- Not Recommended. Aeromexico has a decent around the world chart at 224,000 miles in economy and 352,000 in business, but there are better partners to use your points on.

Air Canada Aeroplan (Star Alliance)- Recommended. Aeroplan has great routing rules that allow for multiple stopovers.

Air France/KLM Flying Blue (SkyTeam)- Depends on Award. Air France offers promo awards several times per year, which can be a great deal for redeeming on Air France.

Alitalia (SkyTeam)- Not Recommended. Until their bankruptcy proceedings are completed and a buyer is found, I would not put transfer any points to Alitalia.

Avianca LifeMiles (Star Alliance)- Recommended. LifeMiles does not pass on partner fuel surcharges, which makes it a great option for Lufthansa business or first class.

Cathay Pacific Asia Miles (OneWorld)- Recommended. Cathay’s OneWorld distance based chart is still a great value despite a recent devaluation.

Etihad (No alliance)- Recommended. Etihad has a very good American Airlines and Royal Air Maroc award chart.

Emirates (No Alliance)- Not recommended. Emirates is a 2 to 1 transfer ratio and their points program does not offer great values.

EVA (Star Alliance)- Decent. EVA has a few sweet spots, but there is good value if you want to travel within a large region such as the South Pacific or Central/South Africa.

Finnair (OneWorld)- Not Recommended.

Hainan (No alliance)- Not Recommended.

Qantas (OneWorld)- Decent. Qantas has a pretty good distance based award chart. You could fly up to 35,000 miles in business class for 280,000 points.

Qatar (OneWorld). Not Recommended. Qatar did a major devaluation of their points program and is no longer a good deal.

Singapore Airlines (Star Alliance)- Not Recommended due to 2 to 1 transfer ratio. You can transfer to Singapore Airlines at a 1 to 1 ratio from American Express, Citi, and Chase.
