There are two options for downgrading from American Express Platinum Card®.
You can either downgrade to the American Express® Gold Card with a $250 annual fee (rates & fees) or the American Express® Green Card with a $150 annual fee (rates & fees).
Unfortunately, there are no downgrade options for no annual fee.
How to Downgrade Your Amex Platinum
There are two options to downgrade your Amex Platinum card to the Amex Green or Amex Gold:
- Call the number on the back of your Amex Platinum card; OR
- Live chat with Amex when signed into your American Express account.
Why You Don't Want to Downgrade
The biggest reason that you don’t want to downgrade a card is that you are better off canceling a card and signing up for a new card to obtain a new welcome bonus.
If you downgrade a card, you may run the risk of being ineligible for a welcome bonus for that new card.
