Which Card Makes Sense for You
The right card depends entirely on how you fly and what benefits you’ll actually use.
If you fly Delta only a few times per year, the Delta Gold Amex is the move. The first-year annual fee is waived, giving you time to test the benefits before committing. The free checked bag for you and up to eight companions on the same reservation can easily cover the $150 annual fee once it kicks in—just two round trips with checked luggage and you’re ahead.
If you fly Delta regularly and travel with a partner, the Delta Platinum Amex hits the sweet spot. The annual companion certificate alone can deliver $300-500 or more in value depending on the route, which nearly offsets the $350 annual fee by itself. Add in the $2,500 MQD Headstart for status seekers and the stacked monthly credits for rideshare and Resy, and this card justifies its cost for frequent flyers.
If you want lounge access and you’re willing to pay for it, the Delta Reserve Amex makes sense—but only if you’ll realistically use Sky Club visits. The 15-visit annual limit means you need to fly Delta fairly often to get your money’s worth from the $650 fee. The upgraded companion certificate covering First Class, Comfort+, or Main Cabin adds flexibility, and the faster MQD earning rate appeals to status chasers. Just be honest about whether you’ll actually use these premium perks.
For business owners, consider whether the business-specific earning categories—like 2X on advertising and shipping for the Gold Business or 1.5X on large purchases for the Platinum Business—align with your actual spending. If they do, the business cards may deliver more ongoing value. If not, the personal cards offer lower spending requirements to earn the welcome bonus.
