Discover IT Credit Card Review


The Discover IT is a decent credit card, but I would not get it until you are past the 5/24 Rule (i.e. you should sign up for Chase credit cards first until you have signed up for more than 5 credit cards in the past 24 months)

Discover doubles your cash back your first year, which will allow you to earn during your first year 10% cash back on rotating categories and 2% cash back everywhere else. The Discover IT becomes much less valuable in the second year because you only earn 1% cash back on the non-category spending. This is not competitive considering the Citi Double Cash offers 2% with no annual fee, but you should still keep the card to take advantage of the 5% rotating categories.

Earning Cash Back

  • 5% cash back in rotating categories (10% first year)
  • 1% everywhere else (2% first year)
  • 2019 Rotating 5% schedule:
    • January 1 – March 31: Grocery stores (excludes Walmart and Target)
    • April 1 – June 30: Gas stations, Uber & Lyft
    • July 1 – September 30: Restaurants
    • October 1 – December 31: Amazon
