Chase Ultimate Rewards points do not expire as long as your credit card account is open. However, those points will expire if you close your account before redeeming or transferring your rewards.
For example, if you earn a welcome bonus from the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, and then close the card before using your points, they’ll be gone forever.
But if you have another Chase Ultimate Rewards card, you can combine your points before you close your card. Here are the cards that earn Ultimate Rewards points:
Other Ways to Lose Your Points
There are several other ways you can lose your Chase Ultimate Rewards points, if you engage in any of the following:
- Engaging in fraudulent activity related to the account or program;
- Repeatedly opening or otherwise maintaining credit card accounts for the purpose of generating rewards;
- Failure to make your minimum payment within 60 days of the due date;
- Filing for bankruptcy;
- Manufacturing spend for the purpose of generating rewards;
- Buying or selling points;
- Moving or transferring points to an ineligible third party or account; or
- Selling, or participating in the sale or exchange of, gift cards, travel or other items of value obtained through use of points
How To Keep Your Chase Points When You Close a Card
When you decide to close your Chase credit card, it’s important to know that your Chase Ultimate Rewards points will expire after 30 days from account closure. To prevent losing your points, here’s what you can do:
- If you have multiple Chase cards that earn Ultimate Rewards and you’re closing only one, you can transfer the points from the card you’re closing to another one of your Ultimate Rewards cards.
- If you have a single Ultimate Rewards card, you can transfer your points to a member of your household or a co-owner of your Chase business credit card, provided you also have an Ultimate Rewards-earning card.
- Another option is to transfer your points to one of Chase’s airline or hotel partners, which can safeguard your points beyond the 30-day limit. Be mindful that this choice may limit your flexibility, as points will be subject to the expiration policies of the loyalty program you choose.
Remember, you have a 30-day window to use or transfer your points after closing your credit card. Planning ahead ensures you can take the best action to preserve your hard-earned rewards.
