Chase IHG Rewards Traveler Credit Card Review

The IHG Rewards Club Traveler card is a no annual fee card with a lot of benefits such as cell phone protection, fourth hotel night free, purchase protection, trip cancellation insurance, and lost luggage reimbursement.

However, we recommend the IHG Premier card over the Traveler because it offers a free annual hotel night and Platinum Elite status that justify its $89 annual fee.

IHG Card Benefits

Fourth Hotel Night Free– You can get a fourth night free when booking a hotel stay of four nights or more with points. For example, if the hotel costs 25,000 points per night, and you are staying 4 nights, it would only 75,000 points in total.

20% on Points Purchases– We generally don’t recommend you by points, but you can get a 20% discount when you purchase points with your card.

No Foreign Transaction Fees– You can use your IHG card anywhere in the world without foreign transaction fees, which saves you 2.7% over some other cards.

Path to Gold Elite Status– You can obtain Gold Elite status by spending $10,000 on your card within a calendar year. However, you can get much better Platinum Elite status with the IHG Premier card plus a free annual hotel night.

Trip Cancellation Insurance–  This benefit covers up to $5,000 per trip per person for prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses if you need to cancel a trip short because of a covered issue such as an illness or accidental injury by the covered person or their immediate family.

Baggage Delay Insurance– This coverage reimburses you for the purchase of essential items if your baggage is delayed more than 6 hours, and allows you can spend up to $100 per day for a maximum of 5 days.

Lost Luggage Reimbursement– If a common carrier loses your bag, you can seek reimbursement up to $3,000 per person for each trip including up to $500 per person for jewelry, cameras, and other electronic equipment.

Secondary Rental Car Insurance– This insurance covers any damage to a rental car that is not covered by your insurance. (Whereas, primary rental car insurance would cover any damage before your insurance.)

Purchase Protection– This 120-day coverage protects your purchases from theft or damage up to $500 for each claim and up to $50,000 for each account. For example, if your new laptop was stolen or damaged within the first 120 days, you could seek reimbursement from Chase.

Cell Phone Protection– You are eligible to receive up to $800 if your cell phone is lost or stolen when you pay your monthly cell phone bill with the IHG Premier card. Coverage is limited to two claims in a 12 month period for a maximum of $1,000 in that period, plus a $50 deductible for any claims.

Extended Warranty– The U.S. manufacturer’s warranty of 3 years or less will be extended for an additional year on eligible products purchased with your card.
