British Airways Card Benefits
$600 Award Flight Credits– Award flights from the U.S. to the U.K. have very high taxes and fees on British Airways. This credit helps you offset some of those taxes and fees with a $200 credit for business and first-class awards and $100 for economy class awards.
You can use these credits up to 3 times per year, but you only get a credit for one-way or round-trip flights departing the United States.
Economy class taxes and fees are more reasonable at about $229 one-way, but they jump to about $625 round-trip due to the U.K.’s very high departure taxes.
I don’t see much value in using Avios for British Airways economy class to Europe because many times you can book a cash flight for the same price of an award flight, when factoring in the taxes and fees.
Travel Together Ticket– If you spend $30,000 in a calendar year on this card, you are eligible for a Travel Together Ticket good for two years. This allows you to book two award tickets departing the U.S. for the price of one. This even includes business and first-class.
All you have to do is pay the taxes and fees on the companion ticket, which could be partially offset by the $600 award flight credits above.
Baggage Delay Insurance– This coverage reimburses you up to $100 a day for 3 days for essential items such as clothing or toiletries for baggage delays over 6 hours.
Purchase Protection– This benefit covers your new purchase from theft or damage up to $500 per claim in the first 120 days.
Lost Luggage Reimbursement– This coverage reimburses you up to $3,000 per passenger for carry-on or checked bags damaged or lost by the carrier.
No Foreign Transaction Fees– You can use your British Airways Visa anywhere in the world without having to pay a 3% foreign transaction fee.
Secondary Rental Car Insurance– This insurance covers any damage to a rental car that is not covered by your insurance. (Whereas, primary rental car insurance would cover any damage before your insurance.)
Extended Warranty– This benefit extends the period of a U.S. manufacturer’s warranty by an additional year if the original warranty is 3 years or less.
Advantages of the Chase British Airways Card
Nice Benefits for Big Spenders- The British Airways card offers nice benefits for those people who put a lot of their spending on the card. The Travel Together Ticket combined with the $600 reward flight credit justifies the $95 annual fee.
Disadvantages of Chase British Airways Card
Lack of Benefits for Small Spenders– People who don’t spend enough for the Travel Together Ticket might be better off with signing up for the Chase Sapphire Preferred after getting the welcome bonus on this card.
The Sapphire Preferred earns Ultimate Rewards points, which can be transferred to British Airways or several other airlines. Plus the benefits are better with primary rental car insurance and trip delay insurance for the same $95 annual fee.
The Chase British Airways Visa is a pretty good card overall. It is worth at least opening for the large sign-up bonus if you can meet the high minimum spend requirement.
