Welcome Bonus

The British Airways Visa currently offers the following welcome bonus: bonus_miles_full

The bonus is subject to Chase’s 5/24 rule, meaning you likely won’t be approved if you’ve opened 5 or more personal credit cards across all banks in the past 24 months.

Additionally, the bonus is not available to current cardholders or those who have received a new cardmember bonus on this card in the past 24 months. However, you may still be eligible even if you’ve had the Iberia or Aer Lingus Visa cards despite the similarities between the cards.

Earning Avios with British Airways Visa

The British Airways Visa offers the following rewards structure:

  • 3 Avios per dollar spent on British Airways, Aer Lingus, and Iberia flight purchases.
  • 2 Avios per dollar spent on hotel accommodations booked directly with the hotel.
  • 1 Avios per dollar on all other purchases.

The card offers solid earning rates on British Airways and partner airline purchases but is not ideal for everyday spending. For maximizing Avios earnings, transferable points cards from American Express Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Capital One Miles, or Bilt Rewards would likely be better options for most people.

Annual Fee of the British Airways Visa

The British Airways Visa has a $95 annual fee that is not waived for the first year.

However, the card offers several valuable benefits that can help offset this cost for frequent British Airways flyers. These include a 10% discount on British Airways flights, statement credits for award flight fees, and the ability to earn a companion ticket, which can provide significant savings for cardholders.

British Airways Visa Benefits

The British Airways Visa offers the following benefits and perks:

Up to $600 Award Flight Credits: Taxes and fees on flights using British Airways Avios to Europe can be several hundred dollars. This card covers the taxes and fees on up to three award flights each year ($200 per business or first-class flight and $100 per economy flight) when you book a reward flight to London traveling on British Airways and pay taxes, fees, and charges with your British Airways Visa.

Travel Together Ticket: If you spend $30,000 in a calendar year, you can book two award tickets for the price of one for flights starting in the US, including in business or first class, but you still have to pay the taxes and fees for both passengers. Alternatively, if you are traveling solo, you can pay 50% of Avios fare.

10% Flight Discount:  Get 10% off a British Airways cash flight starting in the US, including in economy (World Traveller), premium economy (World Traveller Plus), business (Club World), or First.

No Foreign Transaction Fees: You’ll save money on every purchase while traveling internationally since this card doesn’t add the typical 3% surcharge that many other cards impose.

Baggage Delay Insurance: Missing luggage doesn’t have to derail your trip – this coverage steps in to reimburse you for essential purchases when your checked bags are delayed by airlines, trains, or other carriers. You can grab the necessities you need, from a fresh outfit to personal care items, while waiting for your bags to arrive.

Lost Luggage Reimbursement: Your checked luggage gets extra protection against loss, theft, or damage beyond the basic compensation offered by carriers when you pay for travel with this card.

Secondary Rental Car Insurance: This card provides backup protection for rental car damage or theft when you charge the full rental to your card.

Extended Warranty Protection: Your purchases gain an extra year of warranty protection when bought with this card, extending manufacturer warranties of three years or less without the inflated prices of store warranty plans.

120-Day Purchase Protection: Get 120 days of protection against damage, theft, and even loss of your purchases – one of the longest windows available. This premium coverage automatically applies when you pay with your card.

Redeeming Avios

British Airways Executive Club offers some of the most versatile and valuable frequent flyer rewards through its Avios points currency. Avios can be redeemed for flights on British Airways and its oneworld alliance partners, including American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, and more.

One of the best uses of Avios is for short-haul flights, particularly within North America. Flights under 1,150 miles on American or Alaska Airlines cost just 11,000 Avios one-way in economy. This can provide excellent value for domestic U.S. trips or flights to nearby international destinations like the Caribbean.

For long-haul international flights, Avios can unlock premium cabin experiences on top airlines. You can book Cathay Pacific business class from Hong Kong to Taipei for 20,800 Avios, or fly Qatar Airways’ renowned Qsuites between the U.S. and Doha for 70,000 Avios. Avios are also great for accessing exclusive airport lounges, like Cathay Pacific’s The Wing in Hong Kong or the Qantas First Lounge in Sydney.

The program uses distance-based award pricing, so nonstop flights typically offer the best value. Avios can also be combined between British Airways, Iberia, and Qatar Airways accounts. Overall, British Airways Avios provide excellent flexibility and value for both short trips and aspirational long-haul awards when used strategically.

Pros and Cons

Here are the advantages and disadvantages of this card:

Pros:

Strong Welcome Bonus: The card offers a substantial welcome bonus of Avios points after meeting the minimum spend requirement, providing significant value for new cardholders.

Reward Flight Statement Credits: Cardholders can receive up to $600 in statement credits annually when redeeming Avios for reward flights, helping offset taxes and fees on award tickets.

10% Discount on BA Flights: The card provides a 10% discount on eligible British Airways flights when booked through a specific portal, potentially saving frequent BA travelers money.

Travel Together Ticket: Spend a certain amount in a calendar year to earn a companion ticket, allowing you to bring someone along on a reward flight for just the taxes and fees.

Cons:

Limited Airline-Specific Perks: Unlike many airline co-branded cards, this one doesn’t offer common benefits like free checked bags or priority boarding on British Airways flights.

High Spending Threshold for Companion Ticket: The Travel Together Ticket requires a substantial annual spend to earn, which may be challenging for some cardholders to reach.

Moderate Earning Rates: While the card offers bonus points on British Airways, Aer Lingus, and Iberia purchases, the earning rates for other categories are relatively modest compared to some competing travel cards.

Avios Program Limitations: Redeeming Avios can sometimes involve high taxes and fees, particularly on British Airways flights, which may reduce the overall value of the rewards for some users.
