Buying miles can unlock exceptional value for premium cabin travel when done strategically. Avianca LifeMiles has established itself as one of the most versatile frequent flyer currencies, particularly for Star Alliance redemptions. The program regularly offers promotions on purchased miles, creating opportunities to secure premium seats at significant discounts.

Avianca has just launched a new promotion offering bonuses on purchased LifeMiles, making this an opportune time to consider adding miles to your account.

Current Promotion Details

Through Friday, May 30, 2025, Avianca LifeMiles is offering bonuses on purchased miles. The promotion features targeted offers, meaning different members may see varying bonus levels, and some members might not receive any offers at all.

The standard offer provides up to a 160% bonus on purchased miles. You’ll receive the maximum bonus regardless of purchase amount – even buying just 1,000 miles triggers the full bonus percentage.

With this promotion, you can purchase 200,000 base miles for $6,600 and receive 320,000 bonus miles, totaling 520,000 LifeMiles. This brings your effective cost to 1.27 cents per mile, compared to the standard rate of 3.3 cents per mile.

You’ll want to check your account to see what specific offer you’re targeted for, as bonus levels may vary between members.

How Many LifeMiles Can You Buy?

LifeMiles allows members to purchase up to 200,000 miles per account per calendar year before any bonuses are applied. With current bonus structures, your total annual limit including bonuses is 520,000 miles.

You can buy miles in increments of 1,000 LifeMiles. Purchased miles typically post to your account within 12 hours, though terms state it can take up to 72 hours.

Which Credit Cards Should You Use to Buy LifeMiles?

LifeMiles now processes purchases through Points.com, which means buying miles no longer codes as an airfare purchase. This change affects your credit card strategy significantly.

You’ll want to use a card where you’re working toward a minimum spending requirement for a welcome bonus. This maximizes the value of your purchase beyond just earning base rewards.

You could also use a card that offers nice rewards on everyday spending:

Redeeming Avianca LifeMiles

Avianca LifeMiles offers exceptional value for Star Alliance award redemptions, particularly for premium cabin travel. The program stands out for its competitive rates and absence of carrier-imposed surcharges, making it an attractive option for savvy travelers.

One of LifeMiles’ strongest suits is its pricing for long-haul business and first-class flights. For instance, you can book Lufthansa first class from the US to Europe for just 87,000 miles one-way, significantly less than what other programs charge. Business class to Europe is also competitively priced at 60,000-63,000 miles.

The program shines in other regions too. Flights to Asia offer great value, with business class from the US priced at 75,000 miles. A notable sweet spot is the Honolulu to Tokyo route, available for only 48,000 miles in business class or 66,000 miles in first class.

LifeMiles employs a unique pricing structure for mixed-cabin awards, potentially resulting in lower overall costs. This can be advantageous when booking long-haul premium cabins with economy connections.

While LifeMiles excels in many areas, it’s worth noting that the program has some limitations. Complex itineraries can be challenging to book, and award availability may sometimes differ from other Star Alliance programs. However, for simple point-to-point travel, especially across the Atlantic, LifeMiles often provides unbeatable value.

To maximize the program’s benefits, consider subscribing to LifeMiles+, which offers perks like waived change and cancellation fees, as well as mileage rebates on redemptions. With its competitive pricing and minimal fees, Avianca LifeMiles remains a top choice for Star Alliance award travel.

Do Avianca LifeMiles Expire?

Avianca LifeMiles expire 12 months from the last time you earned at least one LifeMile, making it one of the shortest expiration dates of any loyalty program.

There are two exceptions that allow for a longer a 24-month expiration policy if you are a (1) Avianca elite member or (2) a cardholder of the Avianca Vida Visa® Card or Avianca Vuela Visa® Card.

You can reset your mileage expiration by earning one LifeMile. Redeeming miles will not reset your expiration.

Is Buying LifeMiles Worth It?

Buying LifeMiles can represent exceptional value when you have a specific redemption planned. The program’s strength lies in Star Alliance premium cabin bookings without fuel surcharges, making it ideal for first and business class travel.

You can redeem LifeMiles for flights on carriers like All Nippon Airways, Lufthansa, SWISS, and United. These redemptions often provide significantly better value than paying cash, especially for long-haul premium cabin flights.

However, proceed with caution. LifeMiles has implemented multiple devaluations recently, increasing award costs and reducing available award space. The program has a history of making sudden, unannounced changes that can affect the value of your miles.

Before buying, conduct dummy award searches to verify availability for your intended routes and dates. This ensures the miles will actually serve your travel needs.

Consider that LifeMiles expire if you don’t earn miles within 12 months, though purchasing miles extends expiration dates. You can also earn LifeMiles through credit card transfers from Amex Membership Rewards, Capital One, and Citi ThankYou points.

Buying miles works best when you have immediate or near-term travel plans and can confirm award availability. The current rates can deliver substantial savings on premium cabin travel, but only if you use the miles strategically and understand the associated risks.
