Finding the right credit card to maximize rewards at the gas pump can fuel your savings throughout the year. From cards offering high cashback or extra points for travel, there are a lot of options.
For most people, I recommend the no-annual fee Citi Custom Cash, which is a good card if you only use it at gas stations to earn 5% cash back in your top category (1% in other categories).
I put all of my gas station purchases on my Citi Premier® Card since it earns 3x points at gas stations, which I value more than 5% cash back.
The highest rewards at gas stations is the American Express® Business Gold Card (review), but it has a high annual fee.

What Is a Gas Credit Card?
A gas credit card is a type of financial tool designed specifically to reward consumers for their fuel purchases. At its core, this card aims to make buying gasoline more advantageous by offering a variety of incentives such as cash back, points, or discounts directly at the pump or through billing statements. The allure of a gas credit card lies in its ability to transform routine fuel expenses into opportunities for savings or rewards accumulation.
There are two primary categories of gas credit cards:
- Co-Branded Gas Credit Cards: These cards are the result of partnerships between credit card issuers and specific gas station or fuel provider brands. Co-branded gas credit cards are tailored to benefit loyal customers of a particular brand. Cardholders may enjoy exclusive perks such as higher rewards rates when purchasing gas from the affiliated stations, discounts on fuel, or even free car washes. The rewards earned with these cards are often tied to the brand’s loyalty program, offering additional ways to save on fuel or other related purchases.
- General Rewards Cards with Gas Benefits: These are versatile credit cards that offer elevated rewards on gas purchases but are not tied to any specific fuel brand. They cater to consumers who value flexibility in where they can fill up their tank while still earning significant rewards. These cards typically provide a percentage of cash back or points per dollar spent on gasoline, regardless of the station. This category is particularly appealing to individuals who drive frequently or have varying fueling preferences, as it allows them to maximize rewards across a wide range of gas stations.
How Much Can I Save With Gas Cards?
Leveraging gas cards can significantly reduce your fuel expenses, with top-tier options providing an impressive 3% to 5% cash back on purchases at the pump. Beyond cash back, some cards operate on a points system, potentially unlocking greater value.
However, the true benefit of points-based rewards hinges on your ability to utilize them effectively, whether for travel, merchandise, or other rewards. By carefully choosing the right gas card and optimizing its benefits, you can turn a routine expense into a source of savings and rewards.
How To Pick a Gas Credit Card
Selecting the right gas credit card requires a thoughtful evaluation of your spending habits and rewards preferences. Start by identifying whether your priority is to maximize earnings through sign-up bonuses or to benefit from ongoing rewards specific to gas purchases.
Consider the card’s annual fee and calculate if your regular spending will accumulate enough rewards to offset this cost. It’s also important to assess the practicality of any additional perks, such as travel credits or exclusive memberships, based on your lifestyle and usage patterns.
Lastly, ensure the rewards system is straightforward and aligns with your preferences, whether for cash back, points, or flexible redemption options. By scrutinizing these factors, you can choose a gas credit card that optimizes your savings and enhances your spending efficiency.
