Avelo Airlines is implementing change and cancellation fees for the first time since its founding nearly four years ago.
As reported by The Points Guy, this move, effective March 7, 2025, marks a significant shift away from the airline’s long-standing “hassle-free travel” promise that has been prominently featured on their website.
The ultra-low-cost carrier claims this decision aims to boost finances and discourage costly last-minute cancellations by passengers.
Avelo's New Fee Structure
The new fee system follows a percentage-based model rather than the flat fees many airlines use. Here’s what you need to know about the new structure:
- More than 60 days before departure: No change or cancellation fees.
- 8-60 days before departure: 25% of total itinerary value.
- 1-7 days before departure: 50% of total itinerary value.
- Less than 24 hours before departure: 75% of total itinerary value.
What makes this approach different is that fees are calculated based on your entire booking cost – including both the base fare and any add-ons like seat selection and baggage fees. This means the more extras you purchase, the higher your potential change fee could be.
For example, if you booked a $65 one-way flight from Chicago Midway to New Haven and added $80 in seat and bag fees (totaling $145), a change made three days before departure would result in a 50% fee. You’d receive a flight credit of only $72.50.
Skip the Fees with AveloFlex for $5
Alongside the new fee structure, Avelo is introducing “AveloFlex” – an add-on service that lets you avoid these potential charges. For just $5 per person per flight segment, you can maintain the flexibility to change or cancel your booking without penalties.
This fee is significantly lower than what you’d typically pay for travel insurance. For a simple round-trip flight, you’ll pay just $10 per person to protect your entire booking. If you’re traveling with uncertainty in your schedule, this small fee could save you substantial money if plans change.
The Verdict: A Growing Industry Trend
Avelo’s move follows a concerning pattern in the industry. Just weeks ago, Spirit Airlines quietly reintroduced change fees on its lowest-priced fares, and other budget carriers appear to be following suit.
While Avelo’s $5 AveloFlex option provides a relatively affordable workaround, it represents another add-on cost in the increasingly complex budget airline experience. For travelers who value flexibility, you’ll need to factor in this additional expense when comparing flight options.
