Welcome Bonus

The Marriott Bonvoy Business currently offers the following welcome bonus:

bonus_miles_full

Be aware of complex eligibility restrictions. The welcome offer excludes those who have had this card or the Starwood Preferred Guest Business Credit Card from American Express.

You’re also ineligible if you’ve acquired certain Chase Marriott cards recently or received a new welcome bonus on specific Chase Marriott cards in the last 24 months.

Earning Points

The Marriott Bonvoy Business earns Marriott Bonvoy points at the following rate:

  • 6 points per dollar of eligible purchase spent at hotels participating in the Marriott Bonvoy® program;
  • 4 points per dollar at restaurants worldwide;
  • 4 points per dollar at U.S. gas stations;
  • 4 points per dollar on wireless telephone services purchased directly from U.S. service providers;
  • 4 points per dollar on purchases made from merchants in the U.S. for shipping; and
  • 2 points per dollar on all other eligible purchases.

The 6x points earnings at Marriott properties provide good value for hotel stays, making this a strong card for Marriott travelers. The 4x bonus categories offer decent returns for business expenses like restaurants, gas stations, and shipping, though you might earn more with certain transferrable points cards in these areas.

With Marriott points’ lower value at only 0.82 cents per point, the 2x everyday earning rate means you’ll want to use a different card for non-bonus purchases such as the Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card.

Annual Fee

The Marriott Bonvoy Business has a $125 annual fee (rates & fees), which can be easily offset by valuable perks like the annual free night award (worth up to 35,000 points) that you can use at Marriott properties.

You’ll also receive benefits including complimentary Marriott Gold Elite status, 15 elite nights toward status annually, and a 7% room rate discount on eligible bookings.

Card Benefits and Perks

Below are the card benefits and perks of the Marriott Bonvoy Business:

Annual Free Night Award: Each year on your account anniversary, you receive a free night award valid at properties costing up to 35,000 points. You can top off these awards with up to 15,000 additional points for more expensive properties, adding flexibility to your redemption options.

Second Free Night Award: Earn an additional free night award (up to 35,000 points) after spending $60,000 on the card in a calendar year. Like the standard free night award, you can top this off with up to 15,000 points for more expensive properties.

7% Room Rate Discount: As a cardmember, you’ll receive a 7% discount off standard room rates when booking eligible rooms directly through Marriott. While this discount applies to flexible rates, it’s worth comparing against other available rates like AAA or advance purchase options to ensure you’re getting the best deal.

Marriott Gold Status: The Bonvoy Business card offers Marriott Gold status for holding the card. Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status offers benefits such as a 25% points bonus available for qualifying rates, welcome amenity, late checkout, enhanced room upgrades, and enhanced internet.

15 Elite Night Credits: The Marriott Business Amex also gets you 15 elite night credits towards higher elite status. You normally need 50 elite nights for Platinum Elite status, but will the 15 credits, you can achieve it in only 35 elite nights. You can also get more free nights by holding one of the personal (non-business) Marriott Bonvoy cards:

No Foreign Transaction Fees: You’ll save money on every purchase while traveling internationally since this card doesn’t add the typical 3% surcharge that many other cards impose.

Amex Offers: As an American Express cardholder, you can access Amex Offers. These targeted, limited-time promotions provide discounts or bonus points on purchases with select merchants. Offers are added to your card, and you’ll receive either a percentage or dollar amount back as a statement credit when you meet the offer terms. While offers vary and may not always align with your spending habits, this perk can be valuable when an offer matches your preferences.

Baggage Insurance Plan covers your baggage if it is lost, damaged, or stolen and you purchase your ticket with this card.*

Secondary Rental Car Insurance: This card provides backup protection for rental car damage or theft when you charge the full rental to your card.*

Extended Warranty Protection: When you purchase items with your credit card, you’ll get an extra year of warranty coverage on eligible items that have original manufacturer warranties of up to five years. This valuable perk means you can protect expensive electronics and appliances that come with longer manufacturer warranties without paying extra for store protection plans*

90-Day Purchase Protection: Your new purchases are covered against damage and theft for 90 days when you use your card. This protection helps safeguard your eligible items right from the moment you buy them.*

* Eligibility and benefit level varies by card. Terms, conditions, and limitations apply. Please visit americanexpress.com/benefitsguide for more details.

Redeeming Marriott Bonvoy Points

Marriott Bonvoy points offer versatile redemption options, with hotel stays typically providing the best value. We value Marriott points at 0.82 cents per point based on our data study, but you can get the best value at luxury properties or during peak seasons. The program’s dynamic pricing model means rates fluctuate, so flexibility in your travel dates can help maximize value.

A standout feature is the fifth night free on award stays, effectively giving you a 20% discount on longer bookings. This benefit applies to consecutive award nights and can significantly stretch your points. Marriott also offers Cash + Points options, allowing you to combine cash and points for more flexibility.

Transferring Bonvoy points to airline partners is another valuable option. With a 3:1 transfer ratio for most airlines and a 5,000-mile bonus for every 60,000 points transferred, this can be an excellent way to top up airline accounts or access niche programs. However, transfer times vary, so plan accordingly.

For unique experiences, consider Marriott Bonvoy Moments. These exclusive events and activities, often unavailable for cash purchase, can provide memorable opportunities for point redemptions.

While Marriott allows point redemptions for flights, car rentals, and cruises, these typically offer lower value compared to hotel stays or airline transfers. Unless you have a specific need or excess points, it’s generally best to avoid these options.

Pros and Cons

Here are the advantages and disadvantages of this card:

Pros:

Annual Free Night Award: Receive a free night certificate worth up to 35,000 points each year, with the ability to top off with up to 15,000 additional points. This benefit alone can easily outweigh the annual fee.

Elite Status Benefits: Automatic Gold Elite status plus 15 elite night credits annually, which can be stacked with a personal card for up to 30 elite nights total toward higher status tiers.

Strong Bonus Categories: Earn 6x points at Marriott properties and 4x points in useful business categories like restaurants, U.S. gas stations, shipping, and wireless telephone services.

Cons:

Annual Fee Required: The $125 annual fee may not be worth it for those who don’t stay at Marriott properties frequently enough to maximize benefits.

Better Earning Rates Available: Other business cards offer more competitive earning rates on everyday business spending categories, making this card suboptimal for general purchases.

Complex Eligibility Rules: Card approval is subject to complicated restrictions based on current and previous ownership of other Marriott co-branded cards from both American Express and Chase.

Is the Bonvoy Business Amex Worth It?

The Marriott Bonvoy Business presents good value for business owners who frequently stay at Marriott properties, particularly due to its annual free night award that can easily outweigh the modest $125 annual fee.

You’ll get automatic Gold Elite status and 15 elite night credits annually, which can be stacked with a personal Marriott card to fast-track your way to valuable Platinum status.

While the card’s earning rates aren’t industry-leading for business spending, the ability to earn 6x points at Marriott properties and 4x points in useful business categories like restaurants, shipping, and U.S. gas stations provides decent returns.

For business owners seeking a hotel card that provides consistent value through perks rather than spending rewards, this card delivers solid benefits without breaking the bank.
