American AAdvantage Platinum Elite Status Guide

AAdvantage Platinum is the second tier in American Airlines’ elite status, which is above Gold, but below Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum.

AAdvantage Platinum offers nice benefits such as a 60% mileage bonus, complimentary upgrades to first class and Main Cabin Extra, priority boarding, and check-in, and much more.

How to Earn AAdvantage Elite Status

There are five elite status tiers in American Airlines’ AAdvantage loyalty program. You earn each elite status by earning Loyalty Points, and here’s how to achieve each elite status tier:

  • AAdvantage Gold = 40,000 Loyalty Points.
  • AAdvantage Platinum = 75,000 Loyalty Points.
  • AAdvantage Platinum Pro = 125,000 Loyalty Points.
  • AAdvantage Executive Platinum = 200,000 Loyalty Points.
  • AAdvantage Concierge Key = Invite-only.

American AAdvantage measures Loyalty Points for each qualification year from March 1st through the end of February of the following year.

Additionally, once you earn AAdvantage elite status, it is good as of the day you qualify for the status or April 1 (whichever comes first) and continues through March 31st of the following year.

Elite members can also earn additional Loyalty Points Rewards, which allow elite members to choose additional benefits when reaching eleven thresholds from 15,000 Loyalty Points to 5 million Loyalty Points.

How to Earn Loyalty Points

There are many different ways to earn AAdvantage Loyalty Points, and here’s a summary of the most popular ways:

  • Flying on American Airlines, Oneworld Partners, and other partner airlines.
  • Spending on a Citi or Barclays AAdvantage credit card, including Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® and Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard®.
  • American Airlines Vacations and American Airlines Cruises.
  • AAdvantage eShopping portal.
  • AAdvantage Dining (select restaurants).
  • SimplyMiles (offers you load to your credit card).
  • Hotels: American Airlines Hotels, Hyatt, Marriott International, IHG Hotels & Resorts, Marriott Vacations, and RocketMiles.
  • Rental Cars: American Airlines Cars, Avis, Budget, Payless, Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty, Alamo, National, Sixt.
  • Partners: Shell, NRG Energy, Reliant Energy, Xoom, and Miles for Opinions.

AAdvantage Platinum Benefits

American Airlines AAdvantage Platinum elite status offers these benefits:

  • 60% miles bonus for flights on American or partner airlines (8 miles per dollar).
  • Complimentary upgrades for you and a companion up to 48 hours before departure within the U.S., Caribbean, Canada, Bermuda, Central America, and Mexico, including award tickets.
  • Complimentary Main Cabin Extra and Preferred Seats at booking for elite member and up to 8 travel companions.
  • Group 3 priority boarding.
  • Two free checked bags for you and any travel companions on the same reservation.
  • Priority check-in at any first-class lane and priority security.
  • Priority bag delivery ensuring that any checked bags will be one of the first to reach baggage claim.
  • Same-day standby priority for flights to/from the USA, Puerto Rico, Canada, U.S. Virgin Islands, and select Caribbean destinations.
  • Elite service phone line for faster customer service.
  • Special benefits when flying Alaska Airlines, including priority check-in and boarding, priority security, priority seating, priority baggage, two free checked bags, upgrades to first class for elite member and one companion up to 48 hours before departure prioritized after Alaska MVP Gold members, AAdvantage status bonus, and complimentary Premium Class (extra legroom) seats after ticket purchase for Y, B, H, K, M, L, V, S, or N fare and all other fares within 72 hours before departure.
