How to Earn AAdvantage Elite Status
AAdvantage elite status requires accumulating a specific number of Loyalty Points during the qualification year. The thresholds are straightforward:
- AAdvantage Gold = 40,000 Loyalty Points.
- AAdvantage Platinum = 75,000 Loyalty Points.
- AAdvantage Platinum Pro = 125,000 Loyalty Points.
- AAdvantage Executive Platinum = 200,000 Loyalty Points.
The qualification year runs from March 1 to the end of February, with status valid through March 31 of the following year. Your activity must post within this timeframe to count toward status.
Elite members can also earn additional Loyalty Points Rewards, which allow elite members to choose additional benefits when reaching eleven thresholds from 15,000 Loyalty Points to 5 million Loyalty Points.

Is AAdvantage Gold Elite Status Worth It?
Earning AAdvantage Gold elite status can be worth it since it’s reasonably easy to obtain if you take advantage of American’s online shopping portal, have an AAdvantage credit card, and fly at least a few times per year on American.
The ability to choose complimentary Main Cabin Extra seats at check-in is the most valuable benefit since upgrades to first-class will be rare since higher elite members are prioritized ahead of Gold.
My experience as an AAdvantage Gold member has been a success rate of about 10-20% for upgrades to First Class, but I was fortunate once to be upgraded to Flagship Business (lie-flat) on the New York to Los Angeles route.
